Laura’s Advice: Engagement Session

One of the many reasons I love being a wedding photographer is getting to walk through the season of engagement with my couples. While the wedding is the end goal of an engagement, there are so many sweet things that you get to experience through this particular season. Bridal showers, parties, planning, there is so much going on! As a wedding photographer I want my couples to be able to slow down and savor these moments and ultimately be planning a beautiful marriage and life together.

I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to have your engagement photos taken. Not only will you get wonderful images of the two of you, but you also get the chance to spend time getting to know your photographer. You will get comfortable being in front of the camera, understanding how your photographer works, and also get some posing practice! Your wedding photographer is the person you will spend the most time with during your wedding day (more so than your groom!) so establishing a relationship with them is key!

Having your picture taken does not come naturally for most people, and that is totally okay! This is why I suggest making your session more personal. Think of it more as a lifestyle shoot! If you and your fiance love going on picnics or hanging out at a coffee shop, plan a session involving one of those things! You can also plan your session around a place that is meaningful for the two of you; the college campus where you met, a family home, or a park that the two of you enjoy going to! You will automatically be more comfortable and at ease, and this will show in your images!

If you’re stuck on ideas for your session, I love using Pinterest to gather inspiration for all kinds of things! I love creating mood boards for shoots and even engagement sessions. I always suggest creating a board and pinning outfits, places, textures and colors that inspire you. You can then share it with your wedding photographer and the two of you can work together to plan your engagement session! I’ll link my Engagement Outfit Ideas board here, and you can always follow me on Pinterest here.

I am so excited to be sharing some of my best advice for wedding planning and I hope this inspired you to think about all the fun possibilities for your engagement session! Don’t forget to check in next Wednesday for another Wedding Advice post on the blog!
